Looking to wet a line in South Padre Bay without breaking a sweat? Captain Paco Hinojosa's 3-hour charter is tailor-made for newcomers and laid-back anglers alike. With room for up to 4 fisherfolk, you'll be chasing after some of the bay's most sought-after inshore species. Live croaker bait, light tackle, and Paco's expert know-how set the stage for a morning or afternoon of non-stop action. Best part? No need to fuss over gear or snacks – everything from rods to refreshments is covered. Let's dive into what makes this trip a real catch for beginners!
Picture this: you're cruising the calm waters of South Padre Bay, rod in hand, ready to tangle with some hard-fighting fish. Captain Paco's got you dialed in on the hotspots where speckled trout and redfish love to hang out. No need to worry if you've never held a fishing rod before – Paco's patient guidance will have you casting like a pro in no time. The bay's sheltered waters mean a smooth ride, perfect for finding your sea legs without any stomach-churning waves. With live croaker as bait, you're in for some serious rod-bending action. And when the cooler's full of fish, Paco's cleaning service means you can skip the messy part and focus on planning your victory dinner.
On this trip, we're keeping it simple but effective. You'll be using light tackle setups perfect for beginners – think sensitive rods that let you feel every nibble, paired with reels that won't tire you out after a few casts. Live croaker is the name of the game here; these little baitfish are like candy to specks and reds. Paco will show you the ropes on how to hook 'em up and present them just right. We might do some drift fishing, letting the boat glide along productive areas, or anchor up on a honey hole if the bite is on. Either way, you'll learn the art of reading the water, spotting telltale signs of fish activity, and the proper technique for setting the hook when a big one takes the bait. It's hands-on learning that's as fun as it is effective.
"We couldn't have drafted a more perfect trip. Paco put us on the spot to be for sure!! We started our day with a double on our "over" red drum fish, then continued to bend rods as we caught our limit and then some. Which attracted attention of some other boats, but they came and left empty as we continued to net fish!" - Joseph
"Fishing with Paco Hinojosa was an A+ experience! There were 3 of us to include a 5 year old. We went out for 6 hours and he was super knowledgeable, efficient and patient! He was eager to answer all the 5 year olds questions as well as our own. He took us to many spots and we did very well. He can tell you what's on your line just by watching the pole. He is very friendly and helpful! We took back gallon sized ziplocs full of different types of fish that he cleaned and filleted for us back at the dock! Customers for life every time we are back in the South Padre area! Book him, you won't regret it!" - Shal

Sea trout, or speckled trout as the locals call 'em, are the stars of the show in South Padre Bay. These silvery spotted beauties are known for their explosive strikes and acrobatic fights. They typically range from 1-3 pounds, but don't be surprised if you hook into a gator trout pushing 5 pounds or more. Specks love to hang around structure like oyster reefs and grass flats, and they're suckers for a well-presented live croaker. The best part? They're just as tasty as they are fun to catch.
While we're targeting trout, don't be surprised if a redfish crashes the party. These copper-colored bruisers are the bulldogs of the bay, known for their powerful runs and stubborn fights. Reds in the bay typically range from 18-28 inches, but bigger bulls aren't uncommon. They love to root around in shallow water, often giving themselves away with their tails sticking up out of the water – a sight that'll get any angler's heart racing. Redfish are opportunistic feeders, so that live croaker might just entice a big one to bite.
Depending on the season, you might also tangle with some hard-pulling black drum. These cousins of the redfish might not win any beauty contests with their whiskered chins, but they more than make up for it with their tenacious fights. Drum in the bay usually run in the 2-10 pound range, but monsters over 30 pounds aren't unheard of. They're bottom feeders by nature, so if you feel a steady pull instead of a sharp strike, chances are you've got a drum on the line.
Whether you're looking to bend a rod for the first time or just want a laid-back day on the water, Captain Paco's South Padre Bay charter is the ticket. With all the gear provided, expert guidance, and some of the best inshore fishing the Gulf Coast has to offer, it's a no-brainer for beginners and families. Remember, the boat only takes up to 4 anglers, so you're guaranteed a personalized experience. Morning and afternoon trips are available, but spots fill up fast – especially during peak seasons. So don't wait to get your line wet! Give Captain Paco a call and lock in your date for some South Padre Bay fishing action. Who knows? You might just catch the fishing bug along with your limit of specks and reds!

Down here in South Padre Bay, we've got some fantastic Speckled Trout fishing. These silver beauties usually run 14 to 24 inches, packing a nice fight for their size. You'll find 'em hanging around grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. They love to hit artificial lures - jerk baits and topwater plugs are my go-to's. In winter, they school up in deeper water, sometimes down to 160 feet. What makes Specks fun is their delicate, flaky white meat - just be careful not to overcook it. Best time to target them is fall through early spring when the water's cooler. Here's a local trick: troll slowly along grass edges with a plastic shrimp imitation. The bite can be subtle, so stay alert. Whether you're after a good fight or a tasty dinner, Speckled Trout deliver on both counts.

Which attracted attention of some other boats, but they came and left empty as we continued to net fish! Paco is exactly the person I search for as I book hunts and charters, just a good person trying to make an honest living. Thankfully after sorting through many other websites I narrowed my search and called Paco. Then upon the phone call, which turned into lengthy conversation, I knew this is the person to choose. Not a guide looking to slam as many trips into their schedule diluting the value of your vacation. He's looking to maximize the excitement of each trip and that message is clear with his investment into the larger and nicer boat he uses.
